Verified Purchase. This is for Adobe CS3, the older programming which still has a useful link function the more modern CS programs don't have. The value for me with this book is that it provides more detailed information about the specific CS3 function, and it is possibly of use with other CS programs that are updates of the CS3.
It allows a user to work with their program and learn more with the book. The trouble with this book is it's only for one aspect of the CS3 which means other information is needed for learning and using the programs better, there are the other Adobe CS manuals also.
The value for users is better with self teaching than just using the programs freehand. While that's still an option, often the details and alternatives which are shared in the manuals can assist in progressing uses faster. I don't even know what happened to this stupid book.
I bought it for a class and I think I cracked it open once. These classroom in a book things are okay if you're just completely ignorant about a program but there's plenty of tutorials and information online. Only get this book if you're the type of person who just has to have a physical book to learn or you need it for a class. Also this is for CS3 and at the time of this review the current version is CS5 so this book won't even be a big help to anyone right now unless they have the old version Which you shouldn't because CS5 is really, really awesome.
This book also isn't a very good value considering all the information you can get for free. I'm new to Premier Pro CS3 and new to movie editing software and I find this book great for beginners who want to get a solid understanding of how the software works. The book is structured in a manner for easy understanding of the working mechanism of movie editing.
Fundamentals are covered well at the beginning, except for a chapter about "Adobe On Location" which I think should be put near the end rather than the beginning of the book.
More advanced topics such as changing time, compositing techniques lead readers to a lot of potential technique-based creativities, and fit in the right place of the book. Ideas on cutting videos, handling transitions are presented very clearly. The audio editing and mixing chapters are very nice, showing some of the cutting techniques used by professionals. Before I read these chapters I've never thought integration with these Adobe software are that easy, and more importantly, powerful.
There are, however, quite a number of minor problems in this book. First, there are quite some typos in a few chapters related to the exercises. These typos make readers difficult to follow the exercises. Second, as I mentioned before the chapter on "Adobe On Location" should not be placed near the beginning of the book. Where else may I get that kiind of info written in such an ideal approach?
I have a venture that I am ust now running on, and I've been at the look out for such info. If you might be a movie freak, then you better get yourself a head unit so you don't need to visit a show house to take pleasure from great movies. The average consumer may be willing to be satisfied with this solution not knowing the truth. Did I miss something or what?
The title says 69 FREE videos. I just watched 10 and that was all that popped on my screen. However, I waited till the "bugs" were worked out and the product was at least semi or mostly finished and just when I finally downloaded a "trial" wouldn't you know it, Apple makes it mandatory to upgrade to Mavericks, which all I read has a legacy of issues and especially with FCPX I want to learn this but WOW what a challenge. I will be happy to get these color grading tutorial videos downloaded if the download link can be sent to my e-mail add.
